Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Arsh,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am selling my bicycle. I would be grateful if you will be the next owner of this.

The bicycle is really close to my heart, as you know this is my first bike. I got the new motor bike on my birthday, as of result I do not have the parking space for both. My parents suggested me to sell this bicycle and I believe you are the right candidate for this.

As you already know, my bicycle is in an excellent condition and recently I have added an extra gearbox in it. In addition to this, I recently got the new pair of tires as I love to ride it on trails.

I think this bicycle will be a great choice for you because of its colour, style, and control. Moreover, I will buy you an extra 6 months of warranty as well.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why you are selling the bike (lack of space due to a new motorbike), described the bike's condition and modifications, and provided a persuasive reason why your friend would enjoy it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To improve further, ensure that your closing salutation matches the relationship; 'Yours faithfully' is typically used for formal letters to people you do not know, whereas 'Best wishes' or 'Warm regards' would be more suitable for a friend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your message easily. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'Moreover' to link your sentences. However, the transition between the opening and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To reach a higher band, try to vary your cohesive devices further to avoid relying on standard connectors, ensuring the flow feels more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'close to my heart' and 'excellent condition' are natural and appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'candidate' when referring to a friend, which sounds slightly formal or interview-like. Additionally, 'as of result' is an incorrect collocation; 'as a result' would be the correct form. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise descriptive adjectives or idiomatic expressions would enhance the quality of your writing and demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures and attempt some complex sentences. However, there are a few grammatical inaccuracies that persist. For example, 'I would be grateful if you will be' should be 'I would be grateful if you would be' or 'if you could be'. The phrase 'suggested me to sell' is also grammatically incorrect; it should be 'suggested that I sell' or 'suggested selling'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. Focusing on verb patterns and conditional structures will help you achieve greater accuracy.
