Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jashan,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing regarding the bicycle that I am not using now.

Firstly, as you know I bought this bicycle for going to college as my place was far from from the university. Now I find a place near the university, so I am no longer using it because the distance is just 2 minutes walk from the university.

The bicycle has black color and has long stand at the back to carry things. Moreover, it is a latest generation with including GPS, as a result, you can go any unfamiliar place while using the GPS system. It also has a charging port, so you can charge your phone while travelling.

According to me, you would like this bicycle due to its amazing features. In addition, as you live in country side are, so you can save your commuting time by using it. Finally, it will also keeps you fit.

In my opinion you would like it.

Best wishes,

Vishal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining why the bike is no longer needed, describing the bicycle, and suggesting why the friend would like it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of the bike as having a 'long stand' and 'latest generation' is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the bicycle's condition or brand to make the offer more persuasive. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Finally' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive. The paragraphing is sufficient, though the transitions between the description of the bike and the reasons for selling could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the reader can easily follow the progression of your message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'unfamiliar place', 'commuting time', and 'amazing features'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'latest generation with including GPS' (should be 'latest model, which includes GPS') and 'country side are' (should be 'countryside area'). While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and occasionally imprecise. Expanding your range of adjectives and collocations would help improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Now I find a place' (should be 'I have found'), 'it will also keeps you fit' (should be 'it will also keep'), and 'as you live in country side are' (should be 'as you live in the countryside'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, especially when describing past actions versus current states.
