Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Harsimran

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you about the bicycle. I am no longer using my bicycle and want to sell it to you. As you know, on my last birthday my brother gifted me electric motor vehicle so i do-not feel that i need my bicycle anymore. However, the bicycle is in very good condition. Even i used it for less time.

Remember, two weeks ago , you and me had a conversation in which you told me that you need a bicycle to travel from your home to school. So i think it is the best idea to sell the bicycle to you even you have a need.

Moreover, i only sell bicycle for 30 dollars to you as you are my close friend. Please come to my home and have a look as soon as possible.

I will look forward to your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explain why you are no longer using the bike (the gift of an electric vehicle), describe the bike (good condition), and explain why your friend would want it (their need for a commute). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear. To reach a higher band, you could provide more descriptive details about the bicycle, such as its color, brand, or type, to make the offer more engaging and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the reason for selling to the description and finally the offer. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is a bit fragmented. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'However', but the flow between sentences could be smoother. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, as the current paragraphing is a bit thin.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some functional phrases like 'in very good condition' and 'as soon as possible'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors, such as 'electric motor vehicle' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'electric bike' or 'scooter' would be better) and 'I only sell bicycle' (should be 'I am only selling the bicycle'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'you and me had a conversation' (should be 'you and I'), 'i do-not' (capitalization and hyphenation issues), and 'Even i used it for less time' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization will help improve your control.
