Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Samir,

I am writing to offer my current bicycle to you which I was using since my school time. As I recently have purchased a new motor bike, it is of no use for me.

The make of this bike is Avon riders and it is really in good condition because of regular services. It has up to 7 gears and feature of disc break. Moreover, it has water bottle and mobile phone holder to navigate to your destination. Additionally, it has matching red helmet attached with bike which not only protects your head from accidents but also gives attractive look.

I know your previous bike was broken in an unfortunate accident with motor bike, and you commutes through public transport. I would recommend get my bike; it will solve your transportation issue, and you do not need to be dependent on transportations.

Yours faithfully,

Nilay borsadiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining why you are selling the bike, describing it, and explaining why your friend would like it. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the ideas are relevant and the tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, the development of the points is somewhat brief. To improve, ensure you expand on your descriptions and justifications to fully meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'As', which help the flow of ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed, and the transition between the description of the bike and the reason for recommending it could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel a bit mechanical. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but more varied linking words would enhance the cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'unfortunate accident' and 'transportation issue'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'feature of disc break' (should be 'disc brakes') and 'gives attractive look' (should be 'gives it an attractive look'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that nouns and verbs are used accurately in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I was using since my school time' (should be 'I have been using since my school days'), 'it is of no use for me' (should be 'it is of no use to me'), and 'you commutes' (should be 'you commute'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency.
