Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Raman,

hope you are doing well. In this letter I want to tell you that last week I bought a new bike for my daily uses so I don't use my bicycle.

My bicycle is in good condition. I just bought it six months ago. It is blue in color and in mint condition. The both tires are almost new. it does not need any repair and runs very smoothly.

I saw many times you use the local buses to travel nearby places such as local market, library and many places and I just hear from one of our friends that you are planning to buy a new bicycle for your daily uses. I think my bicycle is suitable for you because I have no need of it. i will give it to use at very reasonable price so you can you can save your money.

so if you interested to buy my bicycle, so let me know we will discuss.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why you are no longer using the bike, describing it, and explaining why your friend would benefit from it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the description of the bicycle—for example, mentioning the brand or specific features—to make the letter more engaging and fully developed. Overall, you have successfully completed the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices like 'because' and 'so' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by repetitive sentence structures and some awkward phrasing, such as 'I just hear from one of our friends'. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly. Paragraphing is present, which helps the reader follow your message easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'mint condition' and 'reasonable price'. However, there is some repetition of basic words like 'bicycle' and 'uses'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'I just hear' instead of 'I just heard'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and idiomatic expressions suitable for an informal letter to a friend.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'The both tires' (should be 'Both tires'), 'if you interested' (should be 'if you are interested'), and punctuation issues like missing commas. Additionally, there are some minor slips in verb tense consistency. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure you include the 'to be' verb where necessary in your sentences.
