Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Karan,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this let you know that i am planning to sell my bicycle, and I thought you might be interested in buying it.
The reason I am not using it anymore is that i recently moved closer to my workplace in Brampton, and now i can walk to work. also, last month i bought a car for my family, so the bicycle has been sitting in the garage for the last few weeks.
It is a black Trek mountain bike which i bought two years age. It is in excellent condition and 21 gears, and a very comfortable seat. I also have a helmet and a lock which i will give you free.
I remember you are looking for a bike for morning exercise and to go to college. Since you live near trail this bike would perfect for you.
let me know if you want to come and have a look this weekend.
Best regards,
J Brar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why you are no longer using the bicycle (moving closer to work and buying a car), provided a description of the bike (Trek mountain bike, age, features), and explained why your friend would benefit from it (exercise and commuting). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail in the description, such as the color or specific condition, to make the letter feel more natural and engaging.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'The reason I am not using it anymore', 'also', and 'Since you live near'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the transition between the bike description and the offer of accessories could be more fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'workplace', 'excellent condition', and 'mountain bike' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'bought two years age' (should be 'ago') and 'near trail' (should be 'near the trail'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives or idiomatic expressions that are natural in informal correspondence, such as 'gathering dust' instead of 'sitting in the garage'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and missing articles (e.g., 'near trail' instead of 'near the trail'). Additionally, there is a minor error in '21 gears, and a very comfortable seat', which lacks a verb to connect the description. Focusing on proofreading for basic punctuation and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy and overall score.
