Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear mehak,

Hi, mehak how are you, I want to sell my cycle to you.

I am planning to sell my cycle as I got bike last month from my parents. So, now I am not using my cycle anymore, I thought I can give it to you. I know you are going to school, that is 15 minutes away from your home. I know, In summers it is not an easy task to walk in high temperature. With the cycle you can save your time to go to school.

Moreover, the quality of the cycle is very good, it looks new as I did not broke any part of it. The color is your favourite that is blue. Moreover, it has gears, which can help to speed up without pushing peddles. The helmet is along with this for safety. I will not get full money from you as it is about $1000 but you can give me what you have.

I wish you would like to buy my cycle, I will be happy to give it you as you my my friend.

your friend,

Manveer.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining why the bike is no longer used, describing the bicycle, and suggesting why the friend would like it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of the bike is functional but lacks descriptive flair, and the explanation of why the friend would like it is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the benefits of the bike or provide more specific details about its condition or features to make the offer more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use paragraphing to separate the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For example, you use 'Moreover' twice in close proximity, which makes the flow feel a bit repetitive. Additionally, some sentences are short and choppy, which limits the overall flow. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it', 'this') is clear would improve the cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on simple terms like 'good', 'new', and 'nice'. There are also some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'I did not broke any part of it' (should be 'I have not broken') and 'speed up without pushing peddles' (should be 'pedals'). To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and precise verbs related to cycling or selling items. The spelling of 'peddles' is incorrect, and the repetition of 'cycle' could be improved by using synonyms like 'bicycle' or 'bike'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('I got bike' instead of 'I got a bike'), tense inconsistencies ('I did not broke' instead of 'I have not broken'), and punctuation errors, such as comma splices ('Hi, mehak how are you, I want to sell my cycle to you'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for articles (a/an/the) would significantly enhance your accuracy.
