Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Shree,

I hope this letter finds you well! I really think you are having a great weekend as by the time you receive this letter it would be Saturday or Sunday.

The soul reason of writing this letter today is, I wanted to make you aware of the new changes which has happened to me in the due course of time. I recently got a new job in main city of Bangalore where I have also been provided with the pick-up and drop-off facilities from the company as the location is quite at distance from my residing place.

Although things are currently working out in my favour. Somehow I realized that I haven't rode my bicycle since the time I have got this new opportunity. It is devastating as bicycling was only activity I used do with my whole heart.

I wanted you to have my brand new bicycle which was gifted to me on my last birthday. It a hero brand bicycle which has six different gear and bright front light. You could use to commute to your college take a good care of my little baby. As you are the only who I can think of handing over something which is really close to my heart same as you are to me.

Cheer,

Julie

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained why you are no longer using the bicycle (due to a new job with transport facilities), described the bicycle (a Hero brand with six gears and a front light), and provided a clear reason why your friend would like it (for commuting to college). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed to fully develop the ideas, though you have met the requirements for this task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although' and 'As', to connect ideas. However, there are some minor issues with flow; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. Additionally, some sentences are a bit disjointed, such as 'Although things are currently working out in my favour. Somehow I realized...'. Using a comma instead of a period here would improve the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a personal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some descriptive language like 'devastating' and 'close to my heart'. However, there are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'soul reason' (should be 'sole reason') and 'residing place' (a more natural choice would be 'place of residence' or simply 'where I live'). You also use 'hero brand' which is slightly informal. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise vocabulary usage to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'I haven't rode' should be 'I haven't ridden', 'new changes which has happened' should be 'new changes which have happened', and 'the only who I can think of' is missing a noun (e.g., 'the only person'). There are also some punctuation errors, such as the sentence fragment 'Although things are currently working out in my favour.' These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.
