Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Pranav,

I am fine here and hope you are doing great as well. I am writing down this to let you know about my bicycle that you are very fond of.

Since I am now a mother of a kid therefore, bicycle is not of any use to me since I am in love with my bicycle therefore, it will be a great pleasure if someone close to me keep it. The bicycle is in very good shape and since you are aiming to crack Ontario police examination, it can be a goo d use to you from the perspective of your physical exam. Also, the bicycle has the gears and can be adjusted as per the requirements. Last month only my husband got its service done and all the oiling work along with breaks are taken care of.

Waiting to hear from you soon.

Yours lovingly

Anna Martin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why you are no longer using the bike, describing it, and explaining why your friend would like it. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the bicycle is brief, focusing mostly on its maintenance rather than its physical features. To reach a higher band, you could expand on the bicycle's appearance or specific model details to make the description more vivid and engaging for your friend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the reason for selling to the description and finally the benefits for the friend. You use some cohesive devices like 'Since', 'Also', and 'therefore', though the use of 'therefore' is slightly repetitive and sometimes grammatically awkward in its placement. Paragraphing is present, but the letter is quite short, making the structure feel a bit compressed. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus and use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'in very good shape', 'gears', and 'service'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'writing down this' instead of 'writing to you about this' and 'goo d use' (a typo). To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives and natural collocations to make your writing sound more fluent and sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Since I am now a mother of a kid therefore, bicycle is not of any use', where the sentence structure is redundant and lacks proper punctuation. Additionally, 'breaks' should be 'brakes'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant conjunctions like using 'since' and 'therefore' in the same clause.
