Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Karan,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. The reason I am writing this letter to you is that I have an offer to make for my bicycle, if you are interested in buying.
Since I purchased a new bicycle last month for my upcoming trips, I found that my older bicycle is no longer in need. Although it is difficult for me to let go of my favourite bicycle but I realized that it should be sold to someone who can take good care of it.
The bicycle is in immaculate condition and well maintained. As far as I can remember it never gave me any problems. The tires are a bit worn out but can easily last 1 to 2 years depending on the usage.
I personally believe you are the right customer for it because you always told me how much you love bicycle riding. I am open to offer you half the market price ($300). Please let me know if you are interested in buying or have any further questions related to the bicycle.
Best regards,
Harmanjot Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained why you are no longer using the bicycle (purchasing a new one), provided a description of its condition, and gave a logical reason why your friend would be interested. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a good understanding of the informal letter format.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'As far as', and 'because' to link your ideas. The flow is natural, and the relationship between sentences is clear. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly, but the current structure is effective and coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'immaculate condition' and 'well maintained' are precise and appropriate for the context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions that would add a more natural, native-like flair to your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good command of grammatical structures, using a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively. For example, the sentence 'Although it is difficult for me to let go of my favourite bicycle but I realized that it should be sold...' contains a minor error (the use of 'but' after 'Although'), but your overall control is strong. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. The grammar supports the message well without causing any confusion for the reader.
