Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Richa,

How have you been? It feels days when we last talked. Today I am going to talk about my bicycle which I am no longer using, as you know I started working fullday so currently I do not have time for cycling. Morover, last month when we met you told me that you want to buy a bicycle that is the reason I am writing this letter to you.

I just want to describe my bicycle, as you know I just bought this bicycle 6 months ago. I do not used it much. The colour of the cycle is red, both the tiers are new as I recently changed it. Furthermore, there are two safety locks presents. In addition, the pedal is very easy to push.

I think it is best suits you beacuse I know you want it for doing daily cycling. I am sure you would definitly like it because Red is your favourite colour and it really looking elegant, which attract someones attention very easily. I am looking forward to your response. Let me know your decision.

Yours truly,

Himanshi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the writer explains the reason for no longer using the bicycle, stating that they started working full-day and lack time. Second, the bicycle is described with details regarding its age, color, tires, and safety locks. Finally, the writer explains why the friend would like to have it, mentioning daily cycling goals and the friend's favorite color. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, fitting a letter to a friend. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and all ideas are adequately supported and extended, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing specific points, and an appropriate closing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, the bicycle description, and the appeal to the friend. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'That is the reason' are employed, although some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, such as 'my bicycle' and 'the colour of the cycle', which guides the reader smoothly through the text. Overall progression is clear, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary suited for a general correspondence task. Words and phrases like 'fullday', 'safety locks', and 'elegant' show an attempt to use appropriate terms. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I do not used it much' (used instead of use) and 'attract someones attention' (missing apostrophe). Spelling is generally accurate, but some minor slips occur. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows communication to proceed without hindrance, pointing firmly to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('that you want to buy a bicycle that is the reason I am writing this letter') and conditional ideas. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including run-on sentences ('It feels days when we last talked', 'Today I am going to talk about my bicycle which I am no longer using, as you know I started working fullday so currently I do not have time for cycling'), tense inconsistencies ('I do not used it much'), and missing articles or prepositions. These errors rarely impede communication, but they restrict the score to a Band 6.0.
