Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Milap,

Hope you are fine there . I am also great here. Today I am writing this letter to tell you that I had planned to sell my bicycle . Firstly , my parents gifted me a brand new scooty on this birthday . Then I think that i will sell the bicycle to you beacuse you like this bicycle the most for your young sister . Actually ,I dont think that i will ride on this bicycle now.

Moreover ,I would describe it a little the colour of the bicycle is pink , one basket in the front and a cute light in front of it .

Furthermore , I just think that you would love it because when you came last in my home you loved the design of the bicycle and tell something that I can make it more beautiful .

I would like to see your response on it as soon as possible.

Best Regards,

Kiranpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Kiranpreet, you have successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained why you are no longer using your bicycle, mentioning that your parents gifted you a brand new scooty. You also provided a description of the bicycle, noting its pink color, front basket, and cute light. Finally, you explained why your friend Milap would like to have it, referencing his previous visit and his interest in the design. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, fitting the general letter format. All parts of the prompt are covered adequately with clear, relevant ideas. Therefore, this fulfills the criteria for a solid score in task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from the greeting to the purpose of the letter, description, and concluding call to action. You have used some basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to structure your points. However, the paragraphing is somewhat irregular, with sentences clumped together awkwardly, particularly around the spacing and indentation. Additionally, referencing is occasionally repetitive or slightly unclear, such as 'tell something that I can make it more beautiful'. Improving paragraph division and varying your transitional phrases will help elevate your score in this area.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message to your friend. You utilize everyday words and attempt some less common items like 'brand new scooty' and 'response'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'I had planned to sell' (where 'decided' or 'want' might be more natural) and 'tell something that I can make it more beautiful' (which sounds unnatural). Spelling is mostly accurate, though there are minor mechanical errors like spacing before punctuation marks. The lexical range is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as when you explain why you are selling the bicycle. However, your writing contains several grammatical and punctuation errors. For instance, there are spacing errors before punctuation marks (e.g., 'bicycle . Firstly ,'), tense shifts ('I had planned' versus 'I think that i will sell'), and missing articles or capitalization issues ('for your young sister', 'pink , one basket'). Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and your meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Practicing complex sentence structures and proofreading for basic punctuation will help improve your grammatical accuracy.
