Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Raj,

How are you? I hope you are doing well.

Firstly, I would like to inform you about my bicycle which I am not using in the present time. Furthermore, I have bought a new Honda black colour car so that I have been using car for three months.

In addition, if I talk about my bicycle which is in very good condition. Also, I would like to tell you about parts for example tires, break as well as jumpers are still in good working condition while riding it you can get very flexible and comfortable experience. Moreover, if you would like to buy, I will give you on disscounted price.

Lastly, I thought you can buy it because of your new job at Grand lake road which is located near to your home. So, you can save your time and money by having a bicycle. See yiu soon.

Your friend Rahul.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the prompt, addressing the task in an appropriate informal letter format. The reason for no longer using the bicycle is explained through the purchase of a car, the bicycle is described with some details about its condition, and the reason why the friend might want it is linked to his new job near Grand lake road. However, certain ideas remain somewhat under-developed or briefly stated, reflecting a standard where all parts are addressed but some lack depth and extension. For instance, the explanation of the bicycle parts and the description of why it suits the friend's commute are quite straightforward and could benefit from further elaboration. The tone is suitably friendly and consistent throughout, fully meeting the criteria for a solid pass while displaying some elements of a higher band through its clear coverage of all required prompts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from greeting to the explanation of the bicycle, the offer, and the final recommendation regarding the friend's job. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, although the transitions between ideas can feel a bit mechanical or abrupt, such as the use of 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Lastly'. Referencing is generally clear, but some cohesive devices are overused or used rigidly, which interrupts the natural flow of the letter. To reach the next band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices that connect ideas more smoothly and implicitly, rather than relying on formulaic transition words to link sentences and paragraphs together.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing sufficient resources to convey the intended message. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and descriptive phrases such as 'good working condition' and 'disscounted price', but these are accompanied by notable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word form, including 'disscounted', 'break' instead of 'brakes', and 'jumpers' instead of 'shock absorbers' or a similar bicycle component. There are also unnatural collocations like 'flexible and comfortable experience'. These lexical errors and limitations mean the vocabulary sits firmly at the current level. To achieve a higher band, the writer must demonstrate a broader range of vocabulary used with greater precision and fewer spelling or word-choice slips that require the reader to interpret the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like subordinate clauses introduced by 'so that' and 'because of'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as tense usage ('which I am not using in the present time', 'so that I have been using car'), missing articles ('a car', 'a bicycle'), and prepositional issues, alongside a spelling error in the final sign-off ('See yiu soon'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and the meaning remains clear. The presence of these frequent minor errors places the grammar comfortably at this level. To progress, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences when attempting complex structures, alongside more consistent control over articles, verb tenses, and punctuation.
