Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rohit,

I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to ask you have you require any bicycle for fitness? Actually, I've one which I have never used for 2 years, which might be quit suitable for you.

To be honest, I just purchased a motorbike last year for commuting shorter distances, which I find extremely convenient and time-saving. Although I bought motorcycle for my comfort, bicycle still in excellent condition. I wanted to sell it because it is not in use, and I prefer my new motor bike to visit nearby market helps me to save time and avoid inconvenience.

It is black in colour and it is made up of pure tin which is quite robust for everyday use. It has auto gear technology which is very beneficial for our legs and arms to avoid any physical stress. Apart from this, it also has one basket at front, which would be useful for carrying household goods and produce.

I firmly believe that you'll definitely like it because it fulfill your requirements as you are looking for a cycle which is beneficial for carrying grocery and other things. I hope it would suitable to keep fit and transport the goods.

best regards,

Mohit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points of the task prompt by explaining why the bicycle is no longer used, describing its key features, and outlining why the friend would appreciate having it. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or repetitive; for instance, the explanation of why you bought a motorbike and prefer it over the bicycle is expanded upon, but the description of how the bike suits the friend's specific needs lacks thorough elaboration. This positions the response comfortably in the middle band, successfully meeting the core requirements of addressing the prompt while leaving room for greater depth and richer extension of ideas to reach higher levels.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement with logical paragraphing, separating the introduction, the reasons for selling, the bicycle description, and the closing arguments. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'Although I bought motorcycle for my comfort', 'Apart from this', and 'I firmly believe'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly clunky, as seen in transitions between sentences like 'I hope it would suitable to keep fit and transport the goods.' Paragraph transitions function adequately to guide the reader through the message, providing a coherent progression that meets the standards of this level while showing hints of more natural organizational flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'convenient', 'commuters shorter distances', and 'robust for everyday use'. However, there are notable word choice and phrasing inaccuracies, such as 'have you require any bicycle' and 'purchase a motorbike... for commuting shorter distances' when referring to a bicycle context, alongside minor awkward collocations like 'pure tin' for a bike frame. Spelling and word formation are mostly functional, but these lexical slips and limitations in precision prevent the writing from achieving a higher band, reflecting a restricted range that remains minimally sufficient for clear communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and subordinate clauses successfully in sentences such as 'I firmly believe that you'll definitely like it because it fulfill your requirements'. However, there are persistent grammatical errors and missing elements, such as missing articles ('bicycle still in excellent condition', 'basket at front'), subject-verb agreement issues ('it fulfill'), and awkward prepositional phrases ('made up of pure tin'). Punctuation and verb tenses also show occasional lapses. These errors occur across a mix of sentence types, but they rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical control squarely at this level.
