Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ravi,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you, That I'm selling my Goldstar Bicycle, which I bought last month from Walmart around 499$. The reason why I'm selling is I got a electric scooter as gift from my Elder brother last Sunday on my birthday, and it would be challenging for me to manage Bicycle at the same time.

Basically, the bicycle has all feature which can be come with a expensive branded bicycle. it has head-lights for night and Gears. It also has battery if you don't want to do paddling if can be ride by battery.

As, I know you are looking the same bicycle for mountain climbing since last two Months and don't want to spend lot of money. Since, you are my best friend so I can give you this bicycle in 200$, which will be so cheep for this same variant.

I hope you would appreciate the offer. or if you need more information you can reply me on this email.

kind regards

Rav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully addressed all parts of the letter prompt. You explained why you are no longer using your bicycle by mentioning that you received an electric scooter as a birthday gift from your elder brother, described the bicycle by noting its features such as head-lights, gears, and a battery assist mode, and explained why your friend would like it because he has been looking for one for mountain climbing and wants a good price. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone is appropriately friendly. To reach an even higher standard, some of these ideas could be extended further with slightly more descriptive elaboration regarding its condition or riding experience, but overall, all bullet points are clearly covered and supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting through the explanation of the sale, the description of the bike, the special friend-to-friend offer, and the closing sign-off. You make use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'The reason why I'm selling is', 'Basically', and 'Since, you are my best friend'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your main points into distinct blocks of text. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as in the transition between sentences in the second paragraph. To move into the next band, you would need to ensure that cohesive devices are used even more flexibly and invisibly, creating a smoother and more natural flow from one idea to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases like 'mountain climbing', 'branded bicycle', and 'variant'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'around 499$' instead of '$499', 'manage Bicycle' instead of 'manage a bicycle', 'do paddling' instead of 'pedaling', and 'so cheep' instead of 'so cheap' (spelling). You also write 'looking the same bicycle' instead of 'looking for the same bicycle'. These lexical and spelling errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the characteristics of this level where vocabulary control is still developing. Using a wider and more precise range of natural collocations without errors would elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('which I bought last month') and conditional clauses ('if you don't want to do paddling'). However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include comma splices and incorrect punctuation, such as 'to inform you, That I'm selling', missing articles like 'an electric scooter' and 'a bicycle', preposition errors like 'ride by battery' instead of 'ride it on battery' or 'powered by a battery', and tense or agreement slips. Because errors occur frequently across different sentence structures and occasionally cause some difficulty or hesitation for the reader, your control sits firmly at this level. To improve, you need to produce more error-free sentences and pay closer attention to articles, prepositions, and punctuation.
