Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Amal,

I would like to sell my bicycle to you that has been laying in my garage for some time as I no longer use it.

I recently moved to the countryside and every convenience is at a long distance from my place. I recently noticed I have not used my bicycle for months. I do all my to and fros be it work, groceries, gatherings, gym etc. in my car.

My bicycle is a black Mitu 2025 Model. It is an rechargeable electronic bicycle with a removal basket attachement which is perfect for grocery shopping. It has a removeable battery which needs only once a week recharge. It can also be used for recreational activities like trails and offroads. In addition to this all components are under a two year warranty.

It can be used for longer everyday trips and since you live in downtown where lanes and congested, this would be a perfect fit for you. Please write me back if you would like to buy it from me.

Yours friendly,

Ranbir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points and maintains a clear, friendly purpose: you explain that moving to the countryside and relying on your car mean the bicycle is unused, describe its model, colour, electric features, basket and warranty, and connect it to Amal’s downtown location. The reasons are relevant and generally supported with useful detail, especially the grocery basket and suitability for congested streets. The recommendation that it is a “perfect fit” is clear, though the explanation of why Amal personally would want it could be developed further—for example, by linking the bicycle’s features more specifically to their routine. Overall, the task is covered effectively, with only some scope to make the persuasive reasoning more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear progression: you introduce the offer, explain why you no longer need the bicycle, describe it, and then explain its suitability for your friend. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “In addition to this” and “since” make relationships between ideas clear. The sequence within the description is also easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth: “I recently” is repeated in consecutive sentences, and the list “work, groceries, gatherings, gym etc.” feels abrupt. A more natural transition into the bicycle’s features and a slightly more polished closing would make the cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a personal sales letter, including relevant terms such as “rechargeable,” “recreational activities,” “warranty,” and “congested.” These help communicate the bicycle’s features and its potential usefulness. However, several word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors reduce precision: “to and fros” is not the natural expression here, “removal basket attachement” should be expressed more accurately, and “lanes and congested” is an awkward description. “Every convenience is at a long distance” is also understandable but unnatural. These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the offer, but more accurate everyday phrasing and careful spelling would make the description sound more fluent and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate their meaning clearly, such as “I recently moved to the countryside” and “It can also be used for recreational activities like trails and offroads.” You also attempt to connect ideas with clauses using “as,” “which,” and “since.” Some grammatical errors remain, including “It is an rechargeable electronic bicycle” (article agreement), “which is perfect for grocery shopping” (unclear attachment of the relative clause), and “since you live in downtown where lanes and congested” (an incomplete clause). The sentence listing how you travel is also awkwardly constructed. These errors rarely obstruct the message, but more consistent control of articles and complete clause structures would strengthen accuracy.
