Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Shilvi,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing you this letter to ask for a help in a search of a new job. I have completed my internship program of one year and now I am overwhelmed to start as a doctor.
I am excited to start my career in your cities best hospital with a great health care. Since, last few years Ahmedabad is a well known hub for medicine and it’s a great opportunity to proceed my career by serving the needful there. Though there are no fixed duty hours in any hospital but I would like to do the shifting duties so that’s can manage my timings for further studying and pursuing masters.
It will be of great help if you could find me a job of my desire.
I will be waiting for your positive response with a good news of some opportunities.
Thanking you.
Yours sincerely,
Priya.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You explained your motivation for seeking a new job (completing your internship), described the desired role (a doctor in a hospital in Ahmedabad with shift duties), and requested assistance from your friend. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why you want shift duties is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons and descriptions are slightly more elaborated to provide a more comprehensive response to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific details of the job search and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate these ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since' and 'Though', to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between your internship completion and your excitement about the hospital could be improved with better linking words to create a more natural narrative flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'internship program', 'overwhelmed', and 'pursuing masters'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'ask for a help' (should be 'ask for help') and 'your cities best hospital' (should be 'your city's best hospital'). Additionally, 'proceed my career' is not the most natural collocation; 'advance my career' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more varied and precise collocations would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing you this letter' (should be 'I am writing this letter to you'), 'that’s can manage' (should be 'that I can manage'), and 'with a good news' (should be 'with good news'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor errors with apostrophes and commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
