Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Raman,

I am writing this letter as I am looking for a new role in my professional journey. I know you are wondering why am I looking for a new job? Since I was working for Canadian tire, thoughts about my settled future were popping up in my mind, that made me to decide, I should start my career in my field, hospitality. That's why I chose to resign from the position of forklift operator, and find something in a hotel.

Unlike other occupations related hotel and restaurants, I am thinking to pursue my careers in the role of front desk manager as I have interest in this job. I have quite good communication and leadership skills, which make me a perfect fit for this role. Apart from that, I have studied in my college diploma, Hotel and Restaurant management, about the different functions and tasks which are done in an hotel on daily basis.

What I want you to help me with is that to provide me the contact details on list of employment agencies that help in finding jobs, and assist in building up outstanding resumes. Should they help in find me a suitable occupation as per my interests, it will definitely contribute to my future success.

Kind regards,

Abhishek.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for leaving your current job, described your desired role as a front desk manager, and made a specific request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a personal yet professional style. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more nuanced; for example, you could elaborate more on why you feel your specific skills are a perfect fit for the hospitality industry beyond just mentioning your diploma.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use clear paragraphing to separate your introduction, the description of your career goals, and your request for help. Cohesive devices such as 'Apart from that', 'Unlike other occupations', and 'That's why' are used effectively to guide the reader through your thoughts. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve further, try to vary your sentence starters even more and ensure that the transition between your current job and your future aspirations feels slightly more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'professional journey', 'hospitality', 'occupations', and 'employment agencies'. While your word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for the context, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'studied in my college diploma' (should be 'studied for my college diploma') and 'on list of employment agencies' (should be 'a list'). These errors do not impede communication, but refining these collocations would elevate your writing to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'why am I looking' should be 'why I am looking' in an indirect question, and 'made me to decide' should be 'made me decide'. Additionally, 'done in an hotel' should be 'done in a hotel'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitives will help you achieve greater accuracy.
