Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jass,

I hope you are enjoying your life. I know you are very busy but I need your help for looking a new job. As you know I don't have that much connection than I thought about you.

The reason to new job to work with new people and new environment, as you know its been three years I am working with school board as a support worker. From now on, I am willing to work in Group Home. After all of the years, I feel everything same like my knowledge, thinking or ability to create fun around kids. These all things bother me that I am not doing my full potential. Also, school board have no fun because we can not do anything according to our mind with children to create safe nature.

On the other side, group homes give up opportunity to create your own way for them. This way I can use my potential around them. I know this is a lot to ask but can you please help me to find a job. I am really appereciate about that.

Thank you so much.

Kind regards,

Harmanjot Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: explaining why you want a new job, describing the desired role, and asking for help. Your tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited by language errors, which occasionally make your reasoning difficult to follow. For instance, your explanation of why you want to leave the school board is clear in intent but lacks clarity in expression. To improve, ensure you expand on your points with more precise explanations of your motivations and the specific nature of the group home work you are seeking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure, moving from the opening to the explanation of your situation, the description of the new job, and finally the request for assistance. You use basic paragraphing to separate these ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as 'On the other side' used to transition between paragraphs. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed, which affects the flow of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that your sentences connect more naturally to one another.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message effectively. You use some relevant terms like 'support worker' and 'potential'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'I need your help for looking a new job' (should be 'looking for') and 'I am really appereciate about that' (should be 'I would really appreciate your help'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Expanding your range of collocations and checking for common word-form errors will help improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with prepositions ('help for looking'), articles ('to new job'), and verb tense/agreement ('school board have no fun'). While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication, as the context remains clear. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Practicing the structure of complex sentences will also help you move toward a higher band by reducing the frequency of these persistent errors.
