Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sussy,
How are you doing ? It’s been a while since we last talked, I hope you’re doing well? I just wanted you to know that I have decided to quit my current position as the assistant manager at the hotel.
I decided to find a new role because I feel it is time I move on to something better. Although the job pays well, but I feel that sorting for a new job will enable me explore better options and also gain more experience.
Currently, I would prefer getting a job that will be more practical, and challenging. A job that will encourage me move out of my comfort zone. Also the pay has to be better than my previous one, Atleast I should have enough money left after paying my bills.
If it will not be too much to ask of you, I would appreciate it if you assist me in getting this job issue sorted out. I know you have a lot of connections and wouldn’t mind helping out a friend.
I’ll love to hear from you soon.
Your friend,
Oly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reason for leaving your current job, describe the desired characteristics of a new role, and make a polite request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a personal and informal style throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the 'connections' your friend has or the specific industry you are interested in to further extend your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Currently', and 'If it will not be too much to ask', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the letter is easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'move out of my comfort zone' and 'current position' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'sorting for a new job' (should be 'searching for') and 'getting this job issue sorted out' (a bit informal/clunky). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would be expected at a higher band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'Although the job pays well, but I feel...' contains a redundant conjunction. There are also minor punctuation issues, such as the space before the question mark in 'How are you doing ?' and the comma splice in 'Atleast I should have enough money left after paying my bills.' Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and your control of basic grammar is generally sound.
