Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mehak,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to ask for your help in finding a new job.
As you know, I am working as a warehouse associate. However, there is not much potential in this field for growth. Therefore, I have decided to switch to healthcare category for more career growth.
I am looking for a job as a personal support worker. I have recently completed a program of caregiver. In this program, I have completed two clinical placements in a long term care facility and a retirement home. I have gained hands-on experience in providing daily care while working with clients who have physical and mental disabilities.
As you are working in a Long Term Care facility, is there any open position available in your facility. If yes can you please refer your human resources manager about my profile. It would be a great help.
Kind Regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained your motivation for leaving your current job, described your interest in becoming a personal support worker, and made a specific request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on why you are specifically interested in your friend's facility, perhaps by mentioning its reputation or your desire to work in a familiar environment, which would further develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct part of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Therefore,' and 'If yes' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the description of your training and the request for help could be more sophisticated. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or referencing phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple sentence-to-sentence progression. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter to a friend.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'warehouse associate,' 'clinical placements,' and 'human resources manager' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'switch to healthcare category' (should be 'the healthcare sector') and 'program of caregiver' (should be 'caregiver program'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the more precise or idiomatic language that would characterize a higher band. Focusing on collocations—words that naturally go together—will help you sound more natural and precise in your future writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are some grammatical errors that slightly affect the flow, such as 'is there any open position available in your facility' (which is a statement phrased as a question, requiring a question mark) and 'refer your human resources manager about my profile' (should be 'refer me to' or 'speak to your manager about'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. Increasing your use of varied complex sentence structures will help improve your score in this area.
