Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Harnish,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I have been looking for a new job and would like to have some advice from you regarding it.

Firstly, the reason for looking for the new opportunity is individual growth which allows me for finding better opportunity in any particular field. Apart from that I feel that I am not getting my desired salary at my current workplace.

Further, as I am multi-talented I can do any kind of work. However, if given choice I would like to work as a sports teacher in schools as sports is very close to my heart and I always love it.

Moreover, I would like to request you to find some better opportunities for myself in that particular field. I also want you to use your network and I believe that you will find some solutions of it.

I hope you have receive this email and you will respond to it quickly as soon as possible.

Kind regards,

Raj Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining the reason for the job search, describing the desired role, and requesting assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation for wanting a new job is brief, and the description of the desired role as a 'sports teacher' could be expanded with more specific details about why this role appeals to you beyond it being 'close to my heart'. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons and descriptions are more fully extended with supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points requested in the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Apart from that', 'Further', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas, although some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices to make the flow feel more natural and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some relevant phrases like 'individual growth' and 'current workplace'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'I hope you have receive this email' (should be 'received') and 'find some solutions of it' (should be 'find a solution to it'). The range of vocabulary is sufficient but lacks the sophistication or 'less common' items that would characterize a higher band score. Focusing on more precise collocations would enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'allows me for finding' should be 'allows me to find', and 'as soon as possible' is redundant when used with 'quickly'. There are also minor tense errors, such as 'I hope you have receive'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over verb patterns and prepositions will help improve your accuracy.
