Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sruthi,

Hope you are doing well.

How are you? it's been long time since I heard it from you. I am writing this email to request for a job opportunity. In recent times I lost my job during the recession period. It's been difficult to survive these days as I used up all my savings. Currently I am looking for job in a food industry.

I am looking for a manager role in a where I can use my previous experience like ordering, store maintenance and food stock up etc. I recently saw a posting in online that you are looking for an manager for your chain of restaurants.

I think my education background and experience align with your job requirements. Can you please give me an opportunity by scheduling an interview where I can show my skills. It would be great help for me and my family.

Looking forward for hear from you.

Thank you,

Y .Veena.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: explaining the reason for seeking a job, describing the desired role, and asking for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, although it occasionally shifts into a more formal, business-like register. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat brief. For example, the explanation of the job loss is clear, and the description of the desired role is specific enough to be understood. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on why you are particularly interested in your friend's specific restaurant chain, which would make the request feel more personal and well-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences could be smoother; phrases like 'In recent times' and 'Currently' are functional but could be varied. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, which ensures that the message is communicated effectively throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recession period', 'education background', and 'align with your job requirements'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'heard it from you' (should be 'heard from you') and 'looking for job' (missing an article). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'it's been long time' (missing an article), 'looking for job' (missing an article), and 'Looking forward for hear from you' (incorrect preposition and verb form). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring that verb forms following prepositions are correctly used (e.g., 'looking forward to hearing').
