Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Nkay,

How are you and your work? I hope you are doing great. It's unfortunate that we rarely have spare time to spend together as a result of family and work commitment. But don't worry, we shall make it up to one another during the forthcoming "Miss lagos" beauty contest where we shall laugh have some fun.

As you and I know the kind of workplace toxicity and harassment that I have been experiencing from my boss recently. That has made work unimaginably hell for me and I can no longer condone that. I'm fed up and as I write to you now, my resignation letter has already been written and I am currently looking for a new job. I cannot continue to work in an environment where I am not valued nor is my welfare taken as a priority. I don't have personal.

I am writing to seek for your assistance in helping me secure a remote which promises flexibility and handsome remuneration. I am heavy with a child and cannot cope with the stress of commuting to work each day in a busy place like Lagos. Moreover, the stress of combining taking care of my four children and work alone as a single mother has become very incredibly overwhelming to me.

Thanks in anticipation of your kind help.

Your friend,

Prince.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: explaining why you are leaving, describing the desired job, and asking for help. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. While you clearly explain the toxicity of your current workplace, the description of the new job is somewhat brief. Additionally, there is a confusing sentence fragment 'I don't have personal' which detracts from the clarity of your message. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but more precise detail regarding the specific skills or roles you are interested in would have strengthened the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Moreover' and 'As you and I know', to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between the opening pleasantries and the main body could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, and the progression of ideas from your current situation to your future needs is clear, despite the minor grammatical issues that occasionally interrupt the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'workplace toxicity', 'handsome remuneration', and 'incredibly overwhelming'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'seek for your assistance' (the verb 'seek' does not require 'for') and 'I am heavy with a child' (which is an unusual phrasing; 'expecting a child' or 'pregnant' would be more natural). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, these slight collocations and word-choice errors prevent a higher score. Nevertheless, the meaning is always clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'laugh have some fun' (missing a conjunction), 'secure a remote' (missing a noun like 'position'), and the incomplete sentence 'I don't have personal'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication. You show an ability to construct complex sentences, but the accuracy is inconsistent. Focusing on proofreading for missing words and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help you move into a higher band.
