Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Joshua,

It's been a while since we last spoke. I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to seek you attention as I was looking for the job and thought you could help me in finding the way.

To begin with, I was working at KFC as Store Manager. During the time of inspection the store failed because of the wrong temperature in the cooler which resulted in the shut down of the store. Ever since the incident occurred I am unemployed.

Apparently, I believe that now it a great opportunity for me to move forward in my carrier. Since I already have Managerial experience, I want to move in the same field. I have already applied for jobs and distributed the resumes to the hiring department, local shops and the restaurants.

It will be great if you could help me in the search for the job. I have to pay all my expenses by myself. Without job it is very difficult to survive in the city. I am going to mail you my updated resume and cover letter as it will be easy for you to hand it over. I hope you will understand my situation.

Looking forward for the positive response.

Thank you.

Ridhima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why you are looking for a new job, describing the desired role, and asking for help. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the KFC incident is a bit abrupt, and the description of the desired job could be more specific regarding the industry or type of establishment. To improve, try to expand on your professional aspirations and provide more detail about how your friend might specifically assist you, rather than just asking for general help. Overall, the response is relevant and covers the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'To begin with' and 'Since I already have', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Apparently, I believe that now it a great opportunity'. The referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas from the past situation to the current need and the request for help is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'managerial experience', 'hiring department', and 'updated resume'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'seek you attention' (should be 'seek your attention') and 'move in the same field' (should be 'move into the same field'). Additionally, 'carrier' is used incorrectly instead of 'career'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and proofreading for spelling errors that can change the meaning of your intended message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I was looking for the job' (should be 'a job'), 'now it a great opportunity' (missing 'is'), and 'Looking forward for the positive response' (should be 'to'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Incorporating more varied complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.
