Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: explaining the reason for leaving the current job, describing the desired role, and requesting assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a personal and informal style throughout. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the financial difficulties and the specific need for a Personal Support Worker role to assist with immigration goals. The response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the current situation to the desired future role and finally the request for help. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Moreover' and 'Actually', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, although the connection between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to enhance the flow between the explanation of the job search and the request for assistance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs clearly. There are some instances of repetitive phrasing, such as 'help me' and 'manage my expenses'. While the student uses some topic-specific vocabulary like 'immigration purposes' and 'health care sector', the range is somewhat limited. There are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in immigration purposes' instead of 'with immigration matters'. Expanding the range of synonyms and improving collocations would help elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a new job', 'the health care sector') and prepositions. For example, 'in week' should be 'a week', and 'paying on time' lacks an object. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some inconsistencies with spacing before periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve accuracy.
