Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Pam,

How are you? It has been a while since we last spoke. I hope you are doing well. I am writing for your assistance in finding a full-time job.

As you know, I have been working in the health sector as a paramedic for past one year. From past few months, I feel a lot of pressure and stress while working with patients, especially during emergency calls. I have realized that anxiety may increase the risk on my health and patients' lives.

Therefore, I have decided to change the profession, and start a career in the education field. For that, I started the Education Assistant program three months ago which will be completed by next month. So, I can work for a while as an education assistant and then I will pursue higher education to become a teacher. That is the plan I have made so far.

Since you are working as a teacher, I was wondering if you could suggest me some schools where the hiring for new employees are taking place. I would appreciate it if you could allow me to use your reference in my application. Moreover, I will send you my resume and am hoping that you will take a look for helping me to prepare a strong application for the positions.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Your friend,

Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain the reasons for leaving your current job as a paramedic, describe your transition into the education sector, and make a specific request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a personal and informal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your current situation, your future plans, and your request for help. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'Since' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the letter flows well from the opening greeting to the closing sign-off. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, such as 'health sector', 'paramedic', 'emergency calls', and 'pursue higher education'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the context, there are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'hiring... are taking place' (should be 'is taking place') and 'suggest me some schools' (should be 'suggest some schools to me'). However, these do not impede communication and you successfully convey your message with sufficient flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'for past one year' (should be 'for the past year') and 'From past few months' (should be 'For the past few months'). Additionally, 'anxiety may increase the risk on my health' is slightly awkward; 'risk to my health' would be more natural. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. Your control of punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong.
