Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your reason for leaving, describing the desired job, and asking for help. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation for leaving is brief, and the description of the job is repetitive. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your ideas with more detail, such as explaining why you find welding fulfilling or providing more context about your professional background. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a friend, although the structure is quite informal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Actually' and 'because', but the transitions between sentences are sometimes abrupt. Paragraphing is noticeably absent; the entire body of the letter is written as one block of text. To improve, you should use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the main body points, and the conclusion. Additionally, try to use a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly rather than relying heavily on 'and' or 'because'.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message, but it is quite basic and repetitive. You use 'job' and 'work' frequently, and phrases like 'do my help' and 'sharp my future' are unnatural or incorrect. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'skill job' instead of 'skilled position'. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to employment, such as 'career advancement' or 'professional development'. You should also avoid informal abbreviations like 'u' and 'r', which are not appropriate for an IELTS writing task, even in a letter to a friend.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, including issues with articles ('the' new job), verb tense consistency ('I gave resignation' instead of 'I handed in my resignation'), and sentence structure. Many sentences are run-on or lack proper punctuation. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and the use of text-speak ('u', 'r', 'pls') significantly impact the quality of the writing. You need to focus on subject-verb agreement, proper sentence boundaries, and avoiding informal abbreviations to improve your accuracy.
