Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ankit,

I hope you are doing great. I would like to tell you that I am looking to switch my job from restaurant to any other customer service.

The main reason to change the job is that my hands are getting worst due to dryness as you know that we are not allowed to wear gloves and need to watch the hands after sometime. Therefore, doctor suggested me to take some days off and take rest.

I am looking for job in the post office or any retail store as I have previous experience in that field. I have applied on many online sites. Even I asked my relatives to tell me any job if they know about any position available nearby.

I would like to request you as well if you know about any job please contact me and ask someone else if they know about any space available.

I hope you will understand my situation and I will look forward for your reply.

Best regards,

Supreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: explaining the reason for leaving, describing the desired job, and requesting help. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. The response is well-structured and maintains a consistent focus on the prompt throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph addresses a specific part of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Even', and 'as well' are used to link ideas, although some transitions are slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the letter maintains a consistent, friendly tone throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their situation clearly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'my hands are getting worst' (should be 'worse') and 'need to watch the hands' (likely meant 'wash'). While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score. More idiomatic expressions or precise collocations would improve the quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am looking to switch my job from restaurant to any other customer service' (missing articles and prepositions) and 'doctor suggested me' (missing 'the'). Additionally, 'I will look forward for your reply' contains a preposition error ('to' instead of 'for'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate.
