Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear khushu,

I hope you are doing. I am writing this letter in order to get your assistance in finding a PSW job.

Firstly, I resigned from my tim Hortons supervisor job last week as my wage rate was not worth-it for this designation. Apart from this I decided to look for a job in which I completed my course last year and utilise my knowledge to build better future ahead.

Moreover, I am looking for a PSW job in Brampton as wage rate starts from $23 which is far more than my previous job and there is scope of well settle future from this job. So, I need your help to find me a perfect job because you are in touch with agencies who are dealing with this kind of jobs.

I would like to hear from you as soon as possible.I am waiting for your reply.

Thanks

Your lovely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining why you are leaving your job, describing the desired role, and asking for assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention wanting to 'utilise my knowledge,' you could have provided more specific details about the course you completed or the skills you gained. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are fully expanded rather than just stated. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands exactly what you are asking for.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the reason for leaving to the new job requirements and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly,' 'Apart from this,' and 'Moreover,' though some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your ideas more naturally rather than relying on simple sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'resigned,' 'designation,' and 'utilise.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'well settle future' (should be 'well-settled future') and 'wage rate was not worth-it' (should be 'not worth it' or 'insufficient'). The phrase 'doing' in the opening is incomplete ('I hope you are doing well'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your word choices are grammatically correct within the context of the sentence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you are doing' (missing 'well'), 'in which I completed my course' (should be 'for which'), and 'agencies who are dealing with this kind of jobs' (should be 'this kind of job'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing spaces after periods, such as 'possible.I am'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
