Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Aman,
I hope you are doing well. I'm writing this letter to inform you that I have decided to look for a new job opportunity.
The reason why I have decided to change my job is that my current workplace is very distant from my residence. Therefore, I have to travel for at least 2 hours on daily basis to get to work. This is not only time- consuming but also tiring for me. Apart from this, I have been working there for three years now and I believe that I have gained all the knowledge and skills related to my current profession and I should try to expand my skill horizon and explore new professions.
Since you know that I have been working as a cashier at a local shop for the last few years, I want to look for the office administration jobs. I believe that the job of a receptionist at front desk, would be a great starting point. I will be abled to learn the office norms and having interactions with successful businessmen there, would be beneficial for me in the long term.
I know that you have been working as an intern at one of the well-renounced international company. I would really appreciate if you could guide me and help me to achieve my desired job.
I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Take care.
Warm wishes,
Prateek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain the reasons for leaving your current job (commute and desire for professional growth), describe the target role (receptionist/office administration), and make a clear request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal yet professional register. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between your current experience and the desired role is even more seamless, perhaps by elaborating slightly more on why you feel ready for this specific career shift.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Apart from this', and 'Since you know that' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve further, try to vary your cohesive devices even more to avoid slightly repetitive structures, and ensure that the referencing remains precise throughout the text. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the flow of ideas is consistent.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, such as 'opportunity', 'time-consuming', 'profession', and 'beneficial'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'well-renounced' (which should be 'well-renowned') and 'having interactions with' (which is slightly clunky). However, these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary related to employment. To move into the higher bands, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that less common vocabulary is used with complete accuracy. Your current range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I will be abled to' (should be 'I will be able to') and 'on daily basis' (should be 'on a daily basis'). Additionally, 'at one of the well-renounced international company' contains a pluralization error ('companies'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and verb forms. Your control over complex structures is generally good, but refining these minor errors will help you achieve a higher score.
