Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Amit,

I hope you and your family are doing well. I am writing to tell you about my decision of changing my current job.

It has been two years since I am working in the same company at the same position and now I am feeling that I have gained enough experience from this job and I am repeating the same tasks everyday which is a waste of time. So, I have decided to work with a new company in a fresh environment and with more experienced people.

As you are working in a IT company and have alots of contacts, I would appreciate if you can refer my CV to some HRs or to your company if there is a hiring going on. You know that I am also a computer application editor and can prove myself if I would get a chance. Salary and other facilities would be good same as my current job but the position should be different. I hope you will find a suitable job for me soon.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best wishes,

Harpreet,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for leaving your current job, described the type of role you are seeking, and made a polite request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your specific needs. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific skills you wish to utilize in your next role, which would further enhance the development of your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct part of the prompt. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate your introduction, the explanation of your situation, the request for help, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'So', 'As you are', and 'Thank you in advance' are used effectively to link ideas. The progression of information is clear and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that your referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'the same position' could be linked more smoothly to the following sentence to avoid a slightly repetitive structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'fresh environment' and 'gained enough experience' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'alots of contacts' (should be 'a lot of') and 'computer application editor' (which is slightly ambiguous). Additionally, 'facilities' is not the most natural choice when referring to employment benefits; 'perks' or 'benefits' would be more idiomatic. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to job hunting would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For instance, 'It has been two years since I am working' should be 'It has been two years since I started working' or 'I have been working for two years'. There is also a tense error in 'if I would get a chance', which should be 'if I get a chance'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on mastering verb tenses and conditional structures, as these are essential for expressing future possibilities and past experiences accurately.
