Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Max,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to inform you that I have decided to quit my job of security agent because of lack of work life balance and stressful working environment.
Now, I am looking for employer who offers flexibility and value employees for their work. As you know, I studied bachelors in hospitality and tourism management. I am seeking a job in this field rather than working as a security agent. It could be a travel advisor or destination manager which are my ideal choices.
Since you are currently living in Cape Breton island, I would like know about employment opportunities there as it is a famous place among tourist. I know there are plenty of jobs open there, but I am not sure about employers and hourly pay rates. I need your help to find a best option for me.
I hope to hear back from you soon.
Your lovingly,
Kabir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your reasons for leaving your current job, described your desired career path in hospitality, and made a specific request for your friend's assistance in Cape Breton. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a consistent informal yet professional style. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your goals. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding your specific skills or experience to help your friend provide more targeted advice.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Since,' 'As you know,' and 'but' to link your sentences effectively. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, and the overall structure is clear and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using topic-specific terms like 'hospitality and tourism management,' 'destination manager,' and 'employment opportunities.' While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it is somewhat functional. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common synonyms to add sophistication to your writing. For example, instead of saying 'value employees,' you could use 'prioritize employee well-being.' There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'quit my job of security agent' (should be 'as a security agent') and 'I studied bachelors' (should be 'I studied for a bachelor's degree'). Additionally, 'I would like know' is missing the particle 'to.' While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To achieve a higher score, focus on ensuring articles and prepositions are used correctly and aim for more consistent control over complex sentence structures.
