Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Virpal,
I hope this email finds you well. I am writing this email to you regarding the search of a new job. As you know, currently, i am working at a supervisor position in a restaurant. It is a full time position. But, i am planning to study further. In order to do that i am required to be enrolled in a full time program in college.
For that, i am going to quit my current job. And, i am looking for a part time flexible job. Because as an international student i can only work for part time. I remember , you told me that you are working in a hotel and they are hiring for part time positions at the front desk.
I would love to work in a hotel. I hope you can help me to find a job. Looking forward for your response.
Best regards
Pinka

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your reason for seeking a new job (pursuing further studies), described the type of work you are looking for (part-time, flexible, hotel industry), and made a clear request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the nature of the 'flexible' work you desire or provide more detail about your current skills to make the request for help more persuasive. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the different points effectively. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and repetitive. For example, you start several sentences with 'And' or 'For that', which makes the flow feel a bit mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'given that' would improve the flow and help the ideas transition more smoothly between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'full-time program' and 'front desk'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or topic-specific vocabulary related to employment. For instance, instead of 'search of a new job', you could use 'job hunt' or 'seeking new employment opportunities'. There are no significant errors that impede meaning, but the language lacks sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several recurring grammatical errors. Specifically, the personal pronoun 'i' must always be capitalized. There are also minor punctuation issues, such as the space before the comma in 'I remember , you told me'. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'regarding the search of a new job' instead of 'regarding my search for a new job'. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and proofreading for basic capitalization would significantly improve your score.
