Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Gautam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to let you know that i am looking for a new work and am hoping that you might be able to help me.

Firstly, the main reason, i am currently not getting enough hours at this job. As you know that now i can work full time because i am done with my study and as per rule of IRCC i am able to work more than 24 hours in a week. Apart from that, i also want to gain some new experience with working in other sectors as well which will help me in near future to build my career in that field.

Now, i am working in restaurant as a team member. I have background of business so, as per my academic history i would love to work as business analyst, as an administrator or Office assistant. Apart from this, I studied health care aide in canada so i can work as health care aide and personal support worker in any facilities.

Since you have been working as office administrator in a well know company, I would appreciate if you can help me to find a new job in your company or you also have some references as well which will assist me to get a new work. I would be very grateful if you could share my resume with anyone who might be hiring.

Thanks in advance for your help. I hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,

Kishan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your reasons for seeking a new job, described the specific roles you are interested in, and made a direct request for your friend's assistance. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and informal yet professional style. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough context about your background and current situation to make the request logical and persuasive. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your train of thought easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Apart from that,' and 'Since you have been working' to connect your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to move beyond basic linking words. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics, contributing to a coherent overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully using terms like 'academic history,' 'administrator,' and 'references.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'new work' (should be 'new job') and 'well know company' (should be 'well-known company'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that common professional terms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, particularly with capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I') and article usage (e.g., 'in restaurant' instead of 'in a restaurant'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'as per rule of IRCC' (should be 'as per the rules of the IRCC'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. Increasing your attention to detail regarding articles and subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
