Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear John,

I am writing this letter to seek your help in finding a new job. As you must be aware about that I was recently layedoff along with other 600 people. My company on monday morning unexpectedly announced the layoffs during daily touch point meeting as a part of contingency planning. And I was one of them.

This triggered the chios between the employees. Even after doing my best at my work meeting all the deadlines and being productive I was not able to keep my job safe.

Moreover, this unforseen incident has really turned my life upside down. I am still trying to process whatever has happened. Furthmore, I have already started mylooking for a new opportunity. While going through linkedin, I noticed your company has one opening for which I believe I could be a good fit. I was wondering if you're ok referring me for that position.

Additionally, it would be great help if you can also share my resume in your circle or with your other colleagues and help me secure a job. I am looking for a senior role in finance as I bring 6 year of extensive work experience in financial world. My previous work profile was Financial Analyst.

Moreover, I am also open to explore other roles for example, Data Analyst or Risk Analyst. I believe I have strong skills and I can excel in these profile as well.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Your sincerely,

Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained why you are looking for a new job by mentioning the sudden layoffs at your company, described the kind of job you want by stating you are looking for a senior role in finance as well as being open to data or risk analyst positions, and directly asked your friend John for help by requesting a referral and assistance with your resume. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed and well-developed, resulting in a strong performance for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose from the opening and explanation of the job loss to the specific request for help. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas together. However, there are minor issues with paragraphing and punctuation, such as starting a sentence with 'And' and a slight clunkiness in referencing at times. Overall, the progression of your ideas is clear and easy to follow, and cohesion is managed effectively throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to the professional world such as 'contingency planning', 'deadlines', 'Financial Analyst', and 'resume'. There are, however, some spelling and lexical errors, such as 'layedoff' instead of laid off, 'chios' instead of chaos, and 'mylooking' instead of looking. You also make slight collocation errors like 'bring 6 year of' instead of 'bring six years of'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While going through linkedin, I noticed your company has one opening for which I believe I could be a good fit.' There are several grammatical and mechanical errors present, including missing articles ('bring 6 year', 'great help'), punctuation issues, and spelling mistakes noted earlier. While these errors occur, the majority of your sentences are clear, and they do not impede communication. Your control of grammar is generally sound for a semi-formal letter.
