Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Maskeen,

I hope you are doing great. You are well informed that I am working as a Personal Support Worker in a long term care from last two years. Recently, they hired a bunch of new employees on casual basis aw well as on part-time basis. Consequently, me and my co-workers are facing a shift crisis from last one month. You know my personality, I am workaholic person. Therefore, staying at home for more than two days a week is overdepressing situation for me.

Pinpointedly, I am looking forward to work in the same field on ocassional basis along with working in existing workplace. I will not keep a veil with you while describing the organisation I would like to work with. Honestly, I am not a admrier of working with communities and going home-to-home. I would rather prefer to working in hospital settings and nursing homes.

To my knowledge, you are working as a Registered Practical Nurse in two senior homes. It will be a great help, if you will refer my name to hiring managers of your workplaces.

I have a high hope from you, please don't disappoint me!

Best regards,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student covers all three bullet points of the prompt very well. First, they clearly explain why they are looking for a new job, citing a 'shift crisis' and a desire not to stay at home over-depressingly. Second, they describe the kind of job they would like to have, specifying work in 'hospital settings and nursing homes' rather than community care. Finally, they appropriately ask their friend Maskeen to refer their name to the hiring managers at their senior homes. The tone is suitably informal and friendly, fitting the general letter format. All parts of the task are fully addressed and supported with relevant personal context, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following the required layout including the greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the explanation of the job search, the specific preferences, and the final request. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, with phrases like 'Consequently', 'Therefore', and 'Honestly' guiding the reader through the text. However, a few transitions feel slightly unnatural or awkward, such as 'Pinpointedly', which prevents the cohesion from reaching the higher standard of Band 8. Overall, the logical progression is clear throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms such as 'Personal Support Worker', 'Registered Practical Nurse', 'casual basis', and 'shift crisis'. There are some attempts at less common lexical items, but also noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'workaholic person' instead of simply 'a workaholic', 'overdepressing situation', 'on ocassional basis' (with a spelling error), and 'not a admrier'. Furthermore, phrases like 'I will not keep a veil with you' are unnatural idioms in this context. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter. There are examples of complex structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('It will be a great help, if you will refer...'). However, grammatical errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. Notable errors include prepositions and articles, such as 'working in a long term care from last two years' (should be 'for the last two years'), 'aw well as' (spelling slip), 'me and my co-workers' (should be 'my co-workers and I'), and 'from last one month'. Despite these recurring slips, the meaning remains clear and communication is not impeded, which matches the Band 6.0 descriptors.
