Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear samta,

I am writing to let you know that i am looking for new job for myself. Well the main reason for new job is that have recently moved to another place which is quiet far from my current workplace. And it been really difficult for me to travel everyday this far.

Therefore, i have decided to search for something similar as my current occupation as a food service supervisor near to my appartment. As, i have great experience in this field so it will be pretty convienent for me to adjust into my new workplace. So i am hoping something similar.

It would be really appricated if you can assist me with finding the job. Fortunately, my new appartment is in your city if you can drop my resume to some places as a reference. it will be really thoughtfull ad kind.

I am looking forward for your response.

Thank you

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the reason for looking for a new job is clearly explained, noting that moving to a new apartment has made the commute to the current workplace too far. Second, the desired job is explicitly described as a food service supervisor role similar to the current occupation and located nearby. Third, the letter appropriately asks the friend for assistance, specifically requesting them to drop off a resume as a reference. The tone is informal and consistently appropriate for writing to a friend, such as in the opening and closing. Ideas are sufficiently extended to meet the communicative goals of a General Training Task 1 letter. Therefore, the response satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure dividing the introduction, the job explanation, the request for help, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Therefore', 'Well', and 'Fortunately', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or are punctuated incorrectly. For example, starting sentences with 'As, i have great experience...' disrupts the natural flow. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional punctuation errors around cohesive links slightly hinder smooth progression. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately for a short personal letter, placing this response solidly in the Band 6.0 category.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully communicate their situation and request. There are attempts at less common and topic-specific vocabulary such as 'occupation', 'reference', and 'convienent', but these are accompanied by spelling and word-choice errors, including 'convienent', 'appartment', 'appricated', and 'thoughtfull'. Additionally, minor lexical slips occur, such as writing 'quiet far' instead of 'quite far'. While these inaccuracies are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses like 'if you can drop my resume to some places as a reference'. However, there are persistent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. These include missing capitalisation ('i', 'samta'), missing articles ('looking for new job'), and minor structural awkwardness ('the main reason for new job is that have recently moved'). Punctuation is also faulty in places, such as comma splices or unnecessary commas ('As, i have great experience...'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and they rarely impede communication, aligning with Band 6.0.
