Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Raman,

I hope you are in good state of health. I am writing to you inform you that I am seeking new job opportunities.

Although I have gained a lot of experience & knowledge from my current job, there is no development opportunity in future. I am trying to look for a vacancy that can provide me a chance of promotion in future as well as can strengthen my skills. I have a great interest in marketing jobs because it can help me to get insight into current market trends.

I have already started applying to different organizations online, but it feels like a strong reference is required to get the best job. As you have more experience and professional contacts, I wonder if you could help me find the best match for my requirements. Moreover, please let me know if you know about any available vacancies in well-known companies.

Your Lovingly,

Manjeet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. The writer explains the reason for seeking a new job by mentioning that their current role lacks future development opportunities ("there is no development opportunity in future"). The kind of job desired is clearly described, specifically a marketing role that provides promotional prospects and skill-strengthening ("a vacancy that can provide me a chance of promotion... great interest in marketing jobs"). Finally, the writer explicitly asks their friend for help and professional contacts ("I wonder if you could help me find the best match"). The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout. All parts of the task are well addressed and supported with relevant details, which aligns the response strongly with the requirements for a Band 7.0 score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It opens with an appropriate greeting ("Dear Raman,") and closes with a sign-off ("Your Lovingly,"), following standard letter conventions. Ideas are logically grouped into paragraphs, with each paragraph having a clear focus: the first introduces the purpose, the second explains the motivations and job preferences, and the third requests assistance. Cohesive devices such as "Although", "As", and "Moreover" are used to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions could be slightly more fluid. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, resulting in an overall coherent structure that warrants a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, with attempts at less common lexical items such as "opportunities", "promotion", and "professional contacts". There are some minor collocation and word choice inaccuracies, such as writing "in good state of health" instead of "in a good state of health" or "good health", and saying "writing to you inform you" instead of "writing to inform you". However, the vocabulary used is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication. The range and precision demonstrated fit comfortably within the Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include concessive and causal clauses such as "Although I have gained a lot of experience & knowledge from my current job, there is no development opportunity in future." There are a few grammatical errors, such as the missing article in "seeking new job opportunities" and a typo in the sign-off ("Your Lovingly," instead of "Yours lovingly"). Despite these occasional errors, communication is never impeded, and the majority of sentences are structured correctly. This performance reflects the criteria for a Band 6.5 score.
