Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Ahmed,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to tell you that I have decided to look for a new job and I would really appreciate your help.
The main reason I am looking for a new job is that I have been working in my current position for several years, and there are very few opportunities for career growth. Although I have gained valuable experience, I now feel that I need a new challenge where I can develop my skills and take on more responsibility. In addition, I would like to find a job with better career prospects and a more professional working environment.
Ideally, I would like to find a position as a graphic designer in an advertising or digital marketing company. I am particularly interested in designing social media posts, advertisements, logos and other marketing materials. I would prefer a full-time position with a good team where I can use my existing experience while learning new skills.
As you have worked in this field for quite some time, I was wondering if you could let me know if you hear about any suitable vacancies. If possible, please also share my CV with anyone who may be looking for an experienced graphic designer.
I hope you can help me with this. Please let me know if you come across any suitable opportunities.
Best wishes,
Muhammad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response covers all parts of the prompt very well and in an appropriate tone. The letter successfully explains the motivation for seeking a new job due to limited career growth in the current position, describes the desired role as a graphic designer in digital marketing or advertising, and clearly asks the friend for assistance by checking for vacancies and sharing a CV. The ideas are well-developed and sustained throughout the letter, reflecting a clear purpose and satisfying all bullet points completely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are naturally sequenced, moving from the initial greeting and purpose to the reasons for leaving, the specific job sought, and finally the request for help. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately, such as 'Although I have gained valuable experience', 'In addition', and 'Ideally'. Paragraphing is managed effectively, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the prompt, ensuring smooth transitions from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary that allows for precision and appropriate styling for a semi-formal letter. Less common lexical items and collocations are successfully employed, such as 'career growth', 'professional working environment', and 'suitable vacancies'. Word choices are generally accurate and natural, showing a good awareness of context. Although the vocabulary is mostly standard rather than highly sophisticated, it is well-suited to the task and effectively conveys the intended meaning without errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
There is a good variety of complex sentence structures used naturally throughout the letter, such as conditional structures ('If possible, please also share') and subordinate clauses ('Although I have gained valuable experience...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating solid control of verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and punctuation. The control of grammar is consistent, with complex forms successfully handled and no major structural errors that would distract the reader.
