Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manoj,

I am feeling absolutely delighted and excited to tell you that I have completely recovered from my leg injury and I have made my mind to return to the work.

To begin with, As you are aware that last year I met with an accident and unfortunately I broke my leg. Now I have fully recovered from the injury and I am looking for any kind of sitting job, for instance, receptionist or computer operator. I am fully open to welcome any kind of job except the field job and the job that require hard labor due to my injury, as I am advised not to walk and run by doctor.

Simultaneously, I am seeking your assistance and help to find a new job for myself so that I can bare all my medical bills and the household expenses, I am open to both morning and the evening shift.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and regards.

Your faithfully,

Tarspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a clear and appropriate tone for a letter to a friend. You clearly explain why you are looking for a new job, specifically mentioning your recovery from a leg injury and the need to cover medical bills and household expenses. Furthermore, you describe the kind of job you would like to have, such as a receptionist or computer operator, and explicitly state that you want to avoid field work or hard labor. Finally, you successfully ask your friend for assistance in finding a suitable shift. While all bullet points are covered adequately, some ideas could be extended slightly further with additional context to push into higher bands, yet the overall purpose is fully achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure appropriate for a personal correspondence. You open with a friendly greeting, transition smoothly into explaining your situation, outline your job preferences, and conclude with a call to action and a standard sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, such as 'To begin with' and 'Simultaneously', although referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical at times rather than entirely natural. Paragraphing is mostly clear, though dividing the body text into more focused paragraphs would further enhance the logical flow and progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task. You attempt some less common lexical items and collocations, such as 'completely recovered', 'sitting job', and 'medical bills', which communicate your message effectively. However, there are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as saying 'made my mind to return to the work' instead of 'made up my mind to return to work', and 'welcome any kind of job' instead of 'accept any kind of job'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing feels slightly unnatural, which keeps the lexical score constrained.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions such as 'so that I can bare all my medical bills'. There are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including articles ('return to the work' and 'by doctor') and preposition usage, as well as verb forms like 'bare' instead of 'bear'. Additionally, the sign-off 'Your faithfully' contains a minor form error ('Yours faithfully'). However, these grammatical lapses rarely impede communication, and your sentence structures show a reasonable degree of control overall.
