Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Jashan,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to discuss the important decision of my life with you. As you know, I am doing this accountant job in Brampton since last 2 years and now i want to resign and start a new journey as a home decorater.

I am looking for this job not just because i have an intrest in this field but also it has a great future in upcoming years. I would like to apply in monster companies in this field such as Asian home decor, My home and Decour with Tata. By chance if i would get a job in these companies then it would be a turning point of my life beacuse they offer high salary packges as well as a good enviourment for employees to do work.

Your are living in calgary and i know this is centre for these type of jobs. I would be very thanksfull to you if you would help me to get a job in this field. You have a good connection in this field which can be beneficial for me to hunting a job.

I hope you would refference me.

See you soon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task satisfactorily. You have successfully explained why you are looking for a new job, stating your desire to transition from accounting to home decoration. You also described the kind of job you would like to have, specifically mentioning large companies such as Asian home decor and Tata, and asked your friend Jashan for help with finding employment and providing a reference. The ideas are extended and supported well throughout the letter, such as highlighting the potential growth of the industry and the perks offered by major firms. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise or lean on simpler descriptions in places, which places the response firmly at this level. To reach higher bands, you could develop your ideas with even more specific details regarding the exact nature of the design role you are seeking.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with an appropriate informal tone suitable for writing to a friend, starting with a friendly greeting and closing naturally. The organisation flows logically from explaining your current situation to describing your future career goals and finally requesting help. However, the cohesion feels somewhat mechanical at times, and referencing is not always entirely clear, such as the transition into the third paragraph regarding your friend living in Calgary. Paragraphing is used adequately, but some sentences could be linked more smoothly using a wider variety of cohesive devices. To achieve a higher band, you need to ensure that transitions between paragraphs and ideas are handled with greater subtlety and fluidity, avoiding slightly abrupt shifts in your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to employment and career changes, such as 'resign', 'journey', and 'turning point of my life'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that prevent you from reaching a higher band. For example, you misspelled 'decorater' instead of decorator, 'enviourment' instead of environment, 'packges' instead of packages, and 'refference' instead of refer. Additionally, phrases like 'doing this accountant job' and 'hunting a job' show some awkwardness in collocation. To improve your lexical score, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary more precisely and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If I would get a job... then it would be...') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present, including tense and preposition usage, such as 'I am doing this accountant job... since last 2 years' (which should use the present perfect continuous tense 'have been doing') and 'apply in monster companies' (which should be 'apply to'). Other minor slips include 'this is centre for these type of jobs' and 'beneficial for me to hunting a job'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your meaning easily, but they do occur regularly. To move up, you must exercise better control over complex grammar and verb tenses.
