Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the communicative task. The writer clearly explains the motivation for seeking a new job, stating the desire for a long-term career with company-paid benefits and a pension. The specific job sought is also clearly described, namely a conventional transit operator with Barrie Transit following the successful completion of a class A driving test. Furthermore, the letter appropriately asks the friend for assistance by requesting an employee referral and necessary details such as an employee ID and full name. While all bullet points are addressed, some ideas, such as the explanation of internal promotions, are slightly extended while others are more straightforward. The tone is suitably friendly and appropriate for a letter to an acquaintance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established right from the opening greeting. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction and reasons for the job shift from the specific request for help and the closing remarks. However, cohesion relies at times on mechanical or repetitive linking devices, such as starting consecutive sentences with 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is generally clear, though the transition between ideas could flow more naturally. Overall, the organization is logical and easily followed by the reader, fitting the requirements for this level well.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general transactional letter, successfully incorporating industry-related terms such as 'conventional transit operator' and 'internal jobs'. There are, however, a few noticeable errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'work opportunities' instead of 'work opportunity', 'transporation' with a spelling slip, and 'pension at the retirement' where the article is unnecessary. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary used is sufficient for the task and communication is not impeded at any point.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over various structures, such as conditional clauses ('if you are employed with the city...') and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including article misuse ('a new work opportunities') and a prepositional error ('from you side' instead of 'your side'). Additionally, there is a minor mechanical error in the final sentence ('Looking forward to see you' instead of 'seeing'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication, allowing the meaning to remain clear throughout.
