Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Arun,

My pal, it was so awesome seeing you last time—your energy always adds some extra oomph to my mind. Today I just wanted to drop you a quick note to let you know that I am interested in a new job which you discussed with me during our last catch up.

I vividly remember you explained about a head chef hiring in your restaurant. As you know, right now I am working in a sales company, which is pretty good, but the wages are not worth it. So, I want to switch my job for now.

Furthermore, I have 5 to 6 years of experience working in a prep, which is my hobby as well. According to my understanding, following your dreams always helps you to achieve goals; if I will get my dream job it will be greatful.

Along with that, I am attaching my resume with this, and I know you will help me to find a job in this profession. You can always contact me for further information via email and contact number. I hope you will help me out.

Thank you,

sonam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by explaining why you are looking for a new job, describing the kind of job you would like to have, and asking your friend for help. You successfully mention that your current sales job has inadequate wages and express your desire to work as a head chef at your friend's restaurant. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, particularly the explanation regarding your culinary background and why you want to make this transition. While the tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, fully extending the details about your experience would push your performance further toward higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that addresses different points of the prompt. You use some good linking expressions like 'Furthermore' and 'Along with that' to connect your ideas. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated phrasing around asking for help at the end of paragraphs. To reach higher bands, you should aim for smoother transitions between ideas and more natural progression across sentences without relying on formulaic connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using conversational phrases like 'catch up' and attempting less common items such as 'resume' and 'profession'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as saying 'head chef hiring' instead of 'head chef vacancy' or 'switch my job' instead of 'change my job'. Additionally, you use the incorrect word form in 'greatful' (grateful). These lexical slips and spelling errors are typical of this band level, where vocabulary is minimally adequate but lacks precise control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully employ a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and appropriate informal punctuation. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing patterns, such as 'if I will get my dream job it will be greatful' (incorrect use of the future tense in the conditional clause) and 'working in a prep' (missing noun head). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex structures would help elevate your grammatical score.
