Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Robert,

I hope you are doing well. It's been ages since we caught up. I'm writing to let you know that I've made up my mind to search for a new job.

It is a hard decision for me to change from my current job. I'm looking a job near my apartment as currently I'm traveling a long distance, which is sometimes frustrating for me. Moreover, working in a new workplace can benefit me in many ways, Firstly, the location of course it is near my apartment. Secondly, working with new people and at a new position will help me to gain experience.

As you know I am currently working as part time employee due to my studies, but now I'm looking for an Assistant manager position in a marketing firm. As per my qualifications, I've MBA in Marketing so this is a perfect position to start from. In addition, working under an experienced manager would help me to gain more knowledge.

If you have spare time from your busy schedule, I was hoping that you could help me find this job position as you have more experience than me and you can analyze all the aspects through which I can benefit.

You can come to my house and we can discuss it.

Yours lovingly,

Prabhnoor

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain the long commute and desire for a change, specify an assistant manager role in a marketing firm, and ask Robert to help you find a suitable position. The details about your MBA and wanting to learn from an experienced manager support your choice of work, while the friendly opening and closing suit the audience. Your purpose remains clear throughout. To develop the ideas more fully, explain what kind of marketing firm or responsibilities you are seeking, and make the request more actionable—for example, ask whether Robert knows of vacancies or could introduce you to a contact. The reasons for leaving are relevant, though the benefits of a new workplace are expressed somewhat generally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression from greeting and reason for writing to your job preferences, request for help, and invitation to discuss the matter. Paragraphing separates these functions effectively, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “Firstly,” and “Secondly” help the reader follow your points. The sequence is logical and the overall message is easy to understand. At times, however, the linking feels a little mechanical, particularly in the list of benefits, and the long final request combines several ideas in one sentence. Use transitions more selectively and divide that request into shorter units. You could also connect the commute directly to the specific location you hope to find, making the progression between your reason for leaving and your preferred job smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a personal letter, including relevant terms such as “Assistant manager position,” “marketing firm,” “qualifications,” and “experienced manager.” These choices communicate your career aims clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate for writing to a friend. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “search for a new job” is fine, but “change from my current job,” “traveling a long distance,” and “analyze all the aspects” could be expressed more idiomatically. “Gain experience” and “gain more knowledge” also repeat a similar idea. Aim for more precise, natural phrases and vary repeated wording; this would make the letter sound more fluent without changing its friendly style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “as,” “which,” and “that,” and the meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely impede communication. For example, “I'm looking a job” needs the preposition “for,” and “as part time employee” needs an article and a hyphenated modifier (“as a part-time employee”). In “Firstly, the location of course it is near my apartment,” the clause structure and punctuation need revision; a clearer version is “First, the location would be convenient because it is near my apartment.” Also check tense consistency in “I was hoping that you could help,” since the request is current. More accurate articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries would strengthen control.
