Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Amrinder,
I hope you are well, and I am writing this to let you know that i am looking for a security job in the Vancouver area.
Firstly, I am working in Surrey with Boss Security, and they give me proper full-time work as much i requried. Also, they give me night shifts at some places that are far from my house. So, I decided to look for a new job in Vancouver.
Secondly, I already told you I am working for a security company. I am very glad if I could find a job in the same field because it would be easy, and I also have experience in the job.
Can you help me to look for new job openings in Vancouver, and also let me know if you have any contact numbers of the security companies you have? I would really appreciate your help in finding a job.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Kulveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points: you explain that your current work is in Surrey and that distant night shifts motivate your move, identify security work in Vancouver as your preference, and ask Amrinder for openings and company contacts. The purpose is clear and appropriate for a friendly letter. The explanation of why you want to leave is relevant, but the desired job is described mainly as being in the same field; adding details such as preferred hours, location, or type of security role would develop this point more fully. Your request is clear, though you could make it more specific by asking your friend to recommend you or pass on vacancies. This covers the task well overall, with some ideas less developed than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a sensible progression: you introduce your job search, explain your current situation, describe the kind of work you want, and then make your request. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and the closing is suitable. Linking phrases such as “Firstly” and “Secondly” make the sequence easy to follow, but they sound somewhat mechanical in a personal letter and do not always express a true list of points. The repeated reference to “security” and “job” also makes the flow less varied. You could improve cohesion by grouping related details naturally and using links such as “The main reason is…” or “Since I have experience in this field…”. Overall, the organisation is clear, though some connections could be more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main message, with relevant terms such as “full-time work,” “night shifts,” “job openings,” and “security companies.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are awkward or imprecise, including “as much i requried,” “far from my house,” and “contact numbers … you have.” These choices make parts of the letter less natural, even though the reader can generally understand your meaning. There is also repetition of “job” and “security.” Aim to use more precise collocations and vary repeated words—for example, describe the hours you need, the distance of the work locations, and your friend’s professional contacts. Careful spelling and word choice would make the message clearer and more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and longer structures, including “I am very glad if I could find a job in the same field because it would be easy.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the letter includes some appropriate complex clauses. However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I am working in Surrey” would be more natural as “I work in Surrey” when describing your regular job, and “I am very glad if I could find” needs a more suitable conditional form, such as “I would be very glad if I could find.” In “as much i requried,” the sentence structure is incomplete, and the pronoun “I” should be capitalised. Continue practising tense choice and conditional forms while checking sentence construction and punctuation.
