Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rohan,

I am good and hope you are doing good as well. In this letter would like to inform you that I am looking for new job in your area as I am moving to your city in the next month.

Nowadays, I am doing a part time general labor in a warehouse. After next week, my course of pharmacy assistant will be completed and I will get certification of completion. In your city, I am applying for employment of pharmacy assistant.

I vividly remember, one of yours friends is working in a pharmacy. I met him on your birthday party last year. Can you do one favor for me? I would appreciate if you ask him for giving my reference to his hiring manager. Because, my profile can become strong if I have reference.

I am waiting for your response and I eagerly waiting to see you soon.

Yours lovingly,

Lakhvir Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that you are moving to your friend’s city, identify pharmacy-assistant work as your goal, and ask Rohan to seek a reference from his friend. The request is specific and relevant, and the friendly opening and closing suit the audience. The reason for changing jobs is present, but it could be clearer that your current warehouse work is temporary or why you want to leave it; the course and move are given more emphasis. The description of the desired role is also brief, focusing mainly on the job title. To strengthen the letter, explain what attracts you to pharmacy work and add a detail about the kind of position or workplace you hope to find.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it moves from the reason for writing, to your current work and intended role, and then to the request for help. Paragraph breaks make these stages easy to identify, and the closing is appropriate. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. For example, “After next week” introduces your course completion, but the connection between that qualification and leaving warehouse work is not fully explained. The repeated use of “In your city” and “Because” also makes the progression feel somewhat mechanical. Use clearer transitions to show cause and result, and make references such as “one of yours friends” more precise so the reader can follow who you mean without pausing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “warehouse,” “pharmacy assistant,” “certification,” and “reference.” These choices make your plans understandable, and the tone is generally friendly. There are some inaccurate or unnatural word combinations, including “doing a part time general labor,” “employment of pharmacy assistant,” and “ask him for giving my reference.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your request, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common collocations for employment and recommendations, and choose expressions that fit an informal letter. For example, you could say that you currently work part-time in a warehouse and ask your friend to recommend you to the hiring manager.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “as I am moving to your city” and the conditional request “Can you do one favor for me?” The message remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For instance, “In this letter would like to inform you” is missing a subject, and “I would appreciate if you ask him” needs a more suitable verb form and clause structure. There are also article and plural errors in “looking for new job” and “one of yours friends,” as well as an incomplete construction in “I eagerly waiting.” Review subject–verb structure, articles, possessives, and verb forms, then proofread each sentence. More accurate control of these patterns would make the letter smoother.
