Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear priya,

I hope this letter finds you in the pink of your health. It has been so long since i heard from you.

I am writing this letter to ask for a favour from you. I am currently pursuing a diploma in mass communication and classes only held three times a week, leaving sufficient time which i am unable to manage effectively, thereby making me write you to look for a job. Besides, it would provide me financial assistance in my course while making the best use of spare time. Hence, it will be like killing two birds with one stone because not only do i get to be financially independent but also valuable experience will be gained.

I would appreciate if you will find me a job. It could be at supermarkets, library assistant, a restaurant, or any legal firms. Besides, it would be better if a post in any media is available as it would be easy for me to channelize my skill, enhancing my interpersonal skills which will be benefical for my lucrative career prospect.

I was wondering could you possibly give my reference to your employer or could you give my contact details to one of your friends and it would be great if you would arrange a meeting. I am counting on you because i believe that a friend in need is a friend indeed.

I genuinely hope you will soon find a suitable employement. Give my best regards to your family.

Your's Faithfully,

Preety Rawat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requirements: you explain that your course leaves you with spare time and that work would provide financial support and experience, describe several possible workplaces with a preference for media, and ask Priya to recommend you or arrange a meeting. These details make the purpose clear and relevant. The explanation for changing jobs is necessarily framed as seeking work alongside your studies, but it could be developed more specifically—for example, by stating what schedule or type of employment would fit your classes. The job description also lists several unrelated options, so a clearer priority would strengthen it. The letter already shows some development through the benefits you identify; more focused detail would make the ideas more fully supported and balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, an explanation of your circumstances, a description of the work you want, and a request for help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Besides” and “Hence” help connect related points. However, some transitions feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Besides,” and the long sentence beginning “I am currently pursuing” combines several ideas in a way that makes the progression less smooth. The final request also contains two alternatives joined into one extended sentence. Use a wider range of natural links and separate the reasons, job preferences, and specific request more cleanly to make cohesion more consistently clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a personal letter and attempt some less common expressions, including “financially independent,” “valuable experience,” and “channelize my skill.” These choices communicate your aims, although some phrases are not natural or precise in context: “in the pink of your health,” “channelize my skill,” and “lucrative career prospect” sound awkward. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “benefical” and “employement,” and “legal firms” is an unclear job option in this list. Aim for straightforward, idiomatic wording rather than inserting formal or elaborate expressions where a simpler phrase would be more natural. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “not only do I get to be financially independent but also valuable experience will be gained” and the conditional request about a media position. The main message remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “classes only held” needs a finite verb (“classes are held”), and “I would appreciate if you will find me” would be more accurate as “I would appreciate it if you could find me.” The question “I was wondering could you possibly…” also needs indirect-question word order: “I was wondering whether you could possibly…”. Capitalise “I” consistently and check punctuation around long sentences. More accurate control of these patterns would improve the overall reliability of your writing.
