Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear tolu,

How are you doing? Hope you are good. I saw your mum last week and she said you pass your promotion exam. Congratulation my dear, I know you will always make me proud.

I am writing to tell you I am in need of a job. I resigned from my previous job because of poor payment and lack of facilities in the health center. Since my resignation I have applied in severe hospitals with no feedback. I am a registered nurse. I specialized in paediatrics nursing, because I love children. I also have a master degree in public health. I will really appreciate it if you can help me submit my applications in piadietric department in your health facility. Please you can ask your colleagues for openings in various hospital. I do appreciate it .I attached my CV, passport, documents with this letter.

Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Divine

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that you left because of “poor payment and lack of facilities,” describe your nursing and public-health background and interest in paediatrics, and ask your friend to help with applications and enquire about openings. These details make the purpose clear and relevant. The explanation of what kind of role you want is present, but could be more fully specified—for example, the type of hospital or responsibilities you hope to take on. The request is also somewhat broad; a specific action, such as asking your friend to introduce you to a hiring manager, would make it more effective. The friendly opening and closing suit a personal letter, though “Yours sincerely” is less natural for a close friend.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible overall order: a personal greeting, an update about your job search, your qualifications and preferred field, and a request for help. This makes the main message easy to follow. The opening congratulations are relevant to the relationship, although the transition from this news to your own situation could be smoother. Within the main paragraph, several ideas are packed together, and the request, job preferences and mention of attached documents would be clearer if separated into shorter paragraphs. Linking phrases such as “Since then” or “In particular” could guide the reader more naturally. The sequence is coherent, but some connections feel abrupt and the paragraphing does not yet support the different purposes as clearly as it could.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “registered nurse,” “paediatrics nursing,” “master degree in public health” and “applications.” These help communicate your qualifications and preferred area. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices and spelling slips, including “severe hospitals” and “piadietric department,” which make parts of the message less precise. “Poor payment” is understandable but less natural than a phrase such as “low pay,” while “submit my applications” does not clearly express the help you want. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling, especially for professional terms. This would make your vocabulary more precise without needing to use unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You communicate the main message using a mix of short statements and longer sentences, including the reason for leaving and the request for assistance. Some grammatical errors remain, but they generally do not prevent understanding. For example, “she said you pass your promotion exam” needs a past-tense form, and “I have a master degree” needs an article and a plural form. The sentence beginning “I resigned from my previous job because…” is clear, while “I am writing to tell you I am in need of a job” would be more accurate with “that” after “tell you.” Review verb tense, articles and singular/plural forms, and use full stops to separate the final requests and document details. More consistently accurate sentences would strengthen the letter.
