Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Rajat,
I hope you are doing well. I have been thinking to take change from my current job from long time ago and finally I have decided to move on.
I am feeling stressed and depressed from last couple of months working as a Sales manager. The reason being is, having a nervousness of not able to complete my sales target on time. Almost everyday my boss remind me that I am not a perfect fit for this psition as I am failing to take on responsibilities.
I am planning to switch on to marketing roles which I believe is a better option for a person like me. Also, I have past experience from different company which will help me in finding my next job.
I heard that one of your friend is working with a multi national company in my city. I will be really thankful to you if you could ask him for his reference. I hope you will consider my request and give me a positive response.
Best Regards
Ankit

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three required points: you explain that the sales role is causing stress, identify marketing as your preferred direction, and ask Rajat to seek a referral from his contact. The reason for leaving is supported with a specific example—difficulty meeting targets and your boss’s criticism—which makes the purpose clear. The job preference and request are also relevant, but less fully developed: you could describe what kind of marketing work you want or why it suits your skills, and specify what information or assistance you hope your friend can provide. The friendly opening and closing suit the task. Overall, the main ideas are clear, with some parts developed more fully than others; adding detail to the job preference and request would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, sensible order: you introduce your decision, explain the problem at work, describe your preferred field, and then make your request. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and links such as “Also” and “I heard that” connect related points. The progression is easy to understand throughout. Some transitions are a little mechanical, however, and the final paragraph moves quickly from mentioning your friend’s contact to asking for a reference. You could make that connection smoother by explaining how the contact might help, then stating the specific request. Overall, the organisation is clear and effective, with room for more flexible linking between ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the situation and purpose, including “stressed and depressed,” “sales target,” “responsibilities,” and “marketing roles.” These choices make the main message understandable, and the tone is generally appropriate for a friend. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce naturalness: “take change” does not express changing jobs idiomatically, “switch on to” is awkward, and “psition” is misspelled. “Nervousness of not able to complete” is also an unnatural phrase. Aim to learn common expressions for career changes and workplace pressure, and check spelling carefully. More precise, natural phrasing would make your vocabulary more flexible and convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I will be really thankful to you if you could ask him for his reference.” The overall meaning remains clear, and the paragraphs are formed into complete sentences. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in verb patterns, tense, articles, and agreement. For example, “I have been thinking to take” needs a different verb pattern, while “Almost everyday my boss remind me” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “The reason being is” also creates an awkward sentence structure, and “one of your friend” needs a plural noun after “one of.” Review these patterns and proofread sentence forms; greater accuracy across the varied structures would strengthen the letter.
